Spaces Untitled

I started working on this series of abstract images in January 2020, using discarded props from a high fashion storefront in the Meatpacking District in Manhattan.

Inspired by the modernist colors and shapes of these objects, half spirals, cylinders, and spheres, my main reference points were images of Richard Serra’s sculptures by photographers Dirk Reinartz and Cristiano Mascaro. What might it look like to treat these objects as if they were architecture? Mix in playfulness, improvisation, and tender care of color composition and structure.

I was using a combination of artificial and natural light, moving the objects while shooting, or moving the camera in ways it wouldn’t usually be in a traditional studio or architectural photography setup and ultimately seeking pleasing, ambiguous, and funny images.

The project ended abruptly with the Covid-19 pandemic and my relocation out of the studio. The images are untitled and numbered by the camera’s original file numbers. Print sizes vary in a limited edition of 5.
